How to make easy sim-er bichir torkari

How to make easy sim-er bichir torkari, Indian flat beans seed curry, with potatoes. The flat bean seeds (in Bengali it’s called simer bichi) are boiled and then simmered in a thick gravy made with tomatoes, onions, and ginger and sometimes added with potatoes finished in a warm, spicy, cumin laced sauce.

This is almost the end of winter in Kolkata, in local markets, it is seen some vendors are selling these flat bean seeds. So immediately it stuck in my mind to make a healthy and interesting recipe that can go well with rice or roti in breakfast or launch. You can also make a dal(lentil) with these seeds, in that case, you have to remove the peel of the seeds.

The flat bean seeds are rich in protein, fiber, iron, and vitamins, which can help to prevent many types of diseases, and also a very heart-friendly food.

Main equipment required

Ingredients

Simer bichi/flat been seed-250gm

Onion-1 big size

Tomato-1

Potatoe-1

Ginger green garlic paste-1 tbsp

Turmeric powder-1 tbsp

Roasted cumin powder-1/2 tbsp

Red chili powder-1 tbsp

Salt to taste

oil-2 tbsp

Cumin seeds for tempering-1/2 tbsp

Coriander leaves

How to make easy sim-er bichir torkari

Wash the seeds and put it into a pressure cooker with green garlic paste and salt, and keep it for two whistles

Cut the potatoes, onions, and tomatoes in dice shape.

Heat oil in a hard-bottomed pan/ Kadai, throw some cumin seeds for tempering.

As they splutter and sizzle adds the onions and ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute. Do not fry more (just onions to be translucent)

Add potatoes and spices e.g. turmeric powder, red chili powder, and cumin powder, mix it properly.

 Add tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes, add salt

Now add the pressured cooked seeds, mix well and cover the lid, and allow it to cook for 10 minutes

Uncover the lid and check the salt and consistency of the gravy, if everything is alright add some coriander leaves, then take it out from the oven.

Transfer it to the serving plate and serve hot with rice or paratha.

Instructions

  •  Add tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes, add salt
  • Now add the pressured cooked seeds,mix well and cover the lid, and allow it cook for 10 minutes

  • Transfer it to the serving plate andserve hot with rice or paratha.
